The Philippines, as well as other Asian developing countries, have been under rapid economic growth. However, challenges in governance inherent in an insular country induce regional imbalances of economic development and living conditions. Economic development and improvement of living in a rural area of poverty and urbanization are urgent issues. On another hand, economic development is strongly required in the Philippines simultaneously considering sustainable environmental conservation, mitigation, and adaptation to climate change.
The Philippines and Japan not only have a long interchange history but also a close industry relationship. At present, about 200,000 Japanese live in Philippines.
The symposium aims to promote cross-fertilization among researchers from Japan and Philippines through information exchange and discussion of issues on sustainable environmental conservation and regional development in Asia related to water environment, urban-rural development, health, clean energy, food production, poverty alleviation, and climate change.
It aims to encourage development of academic researches on urban-rural environmental sustainability and socioeconomic development by expecting participants from various academic, research institutions and local government institutions. This international symposium was conceived by the TIGS, of the University of Tokyo (UoT) and by MMSU as an initial partnership for mutual benefits and academic excellence it gets funding from Banpaku and TIGS-UoT, Japan. After the symposium, MMSU and TIGS-UoT as well as the others participants are expected to continue to commit and forge more productive partnerships and networking for mutual benefits for agro-environmental sustainability and socio-economic development.
