Objectives

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) will be held this December in Copenhagen, the goal of which is to construct an international framework for the reduction of green house gas emissions covering the period after 2012: the Post-Kyoto Protocol. The next international framework is required to be equitable and effective and rest on the premise that all major emitting countries including developing countries will participate in this framework. It is crucial that an ambitious and effective international response to climate change will be agreed upon in COP15, which will lead to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2050, under the situation where overcoming current world economic crisis is the highest priority for many countries.
This international symposium titled “Pathway to Low Carbon Society after Kyoto Protocol” aims to discuss and propose what each country and region need to achieve toward the establishment of a Low Carbon Society through speeches and panel discussions participated by experts from Japan, the U.S. and Europe. The speakers will address the green house gas reduction target and policies for achieving the target for each region as well as touch on how to approach developing countries to encourage them to participate in the international framework to be discussed in the upcoming COP15.
