In IPBES, scenarios and models will be used to explore plausible future developments of the human society and the consequences of these developments for biodiversity and ecosystem services. Multistakeholder participation in scenario development contributes to improved dialogue between stakeholders, the development of capacity of stakeholders to understand and use scenarios in decision making and improved integration of stakeholder knowledge in scenarios. How to connect/upscale various local and national scenario building efforts to regional and global scenarios is one of the key challenges for IPBES regional and global assessments.
