While agriculture in Japan is modernized, the country’s traditional agriculture and farming methods, rural culture, and rural landscapes and related biodiversity have been well conserved as integrated “agri-cultural systems”; some of which are recognized and designated as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
This symposium will report on the research findings and outcomes of the project Developing a Comprehensive Assessment Method for Ingenious “Agri-Cultural” Systems in Japan (ACS). Invited experts from Japan, China and the Republic of Korea will also share their research on agri-cultural systems.
UNU-IAS and the University of Tokyo have been collaborating on a joint research project on Developing a Comprehensive Assessment Method for Ingenious “Agri-Cultural” Systems in Japan (ACS), a 3-year project funded by the Japan Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) from 2012. The research findings were utilized in the national selection of Japan’s GIAHS candidate sites in October 2014.
Simultaneous Japanese–English translation will be provided at this event.
